One of the most entertaining ways how to learn Hindi is by using mass media.  It’s much more fun than a Hindi course!  Watching films, reading newspapers, listening to radio shows and enjoying other forms of media is a great way to learn any language.  You hear the language spoken by native speakers at a natural pace.  You hear it spoken in different voices and maybe different accents.  You gain cultural awareness by being exposed to the same issues and information as native language speakers.  You learn current, colloquial vocabulary and informalities of speech like contractions.  Exposing yourself to Hindi language media is a formidable supplement to your Hindi course and a great way how to learn Hindi.

If you are taking a Hindi course, you really should supplement your classroom learning with the vast amount of mass media available on the internet.  Since so much of it is free, there is really no excuse not to take advantage of it.  And it is a great advantage, to learn the language by native language speakers, speaking real vocabulary at a conversational speed, and to get cultural, political or sports news at the same time.  This material is easy to find, so just do a Google search and you will find tremendous resources for how to learn Hindi.

How to learn Hindi?  Well, for one thing, you need to learn the Hindi rules of gender.  Unlike English, all nouns in Hindi have gender.  It is not hard to figure out that boys, men and male animals would have the masculine gender or that girls, women and female animals would have the feminine one.  More than that, inanimate objects also have gender.  They are masculine or feminine depending on nothing more than convention.  Other languages that have masculine and feminine genders include the Romance languages, such as French, Spanish and Italian.  Some languages, such as German and Latin, also have a neuter gender.  Hindi does not have a neuter.  That makes how to learn Hindi a little easier, at least.

In Hindi, adjectives convey the gender of the noun they modify.  That is a typical characteristic of languages that have genders for their nouns.    What is less common is that in Hindi verbs also agree with their subjects with respect to gender. 

Learning Hindi requires you to learn the gender of nouns.  The best way to do so is to think about gender whenever you add a noun to your vocabulary.  Learn the gender immediately when you encounter a new noun.  Practice the gender as you practice your lists of vocabulary words.  Eventually, you will know the gender of nouns without having to pause to think of it.

You are smart to be studying how to learn Hindi.  Hindi is spoken by millions of people and is one of the official languages of India.  With India’s importance increasing globally, and business between the US and India constantly increasing, any business person or business student with an interest in an international career would be wise to learn Hindi.  A systematic approach to learning Hindi, and a diligent application of that plan, is your best option for how to learn Hindi.

This article will give you some basic facts about Hindi grammar.

1. Word order.  In Hindi, verbs generally go at the end of the sentence.  The structure of a typical sentence is subject first, then object, then verb.  Furthermore, Hindi doesn’t have prepositions.  Rather, it has postpositions, words that follow the noun or phrase that they modify.
   
2. Articles.  Hindi does not use definite or indefinite articles.  For clarity or emphasis, the number “one” can be used in place of an indefinite article.
3. Gender.  Hindi uses two genders, masculine and feminine.  As with other languages that use gender, men, boys and male animals are masculine while women, girls and female animals are feminine.  Inanimate objects and concepts are either masculine or feminine depending on convention.  On the other hand, the third person singular pronoun does not have a gender.  So, instead of using “he” or “she,” Hindi uses a pronoun that could be translated “this one.” 
   
4. Verbs.  Hindi verbs agree with the noun both in number and in gender.  Hindi uses the past, present, future and subjunctive tenses.  Hindi verbs also show aspect, depending on whether an action is habitual, progressive or perfective.
5. The second person has three verb forms, each of which demonstrates a different level of showing respect by the speaker to the person being addressed.  The first is the formal level of respect, which has both singular and plural forms.  Use this in formal settings or when speaking to someone older or superior in some way.  The second is the informal level, which also has both singular and plural forms.  Use this when speaking to someone younger or to someone who is in some way subordinate.  Then there is an extremely informal form, which only exists in the singular.  Be careful only to use this with a very close friend because it can be considered a slight if used inappropriately.

Hindi is written in the Devanagari script, which is the alphabet in which the sacred texts of Sanskrit were written.  Commas, question marks and exclamation points are used in Hindi as they are in English.  However, instead of a period, you are more likely to see a vertical line at the end of a sentence.

Spoken Hindi shares enough in common with Urdu, the national language of Pakistan, that the two can be considered the same language.  However, Urdu is written in the Perso-Arabic script.
